Sentara Health is currently recruiting for Respiratory Apprentices to join their team at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in downtown Norfolk, VA. This role is a Full Time, Rotating Shift position.
Program Overview:
The Respiratory Apprentice position is tailored to prepare respiratory program students for the role of a licensed Respiratory Therapist by providing a diverse skill set and extensive work-based learning opportunities. This apprenticeship includes off-site educational coursework and on-site training within an accredited Respiratory team in a fully immersive experience. Half of the position duties will be spent completing academic program coursework; the remainder will include contextualized learning and practical application of skills. The on-site training, guided by department leaders, includes meaningful tasks that encompass both respiratory responsibilities and related duties to expand overall knowledge and clinical skills.
Assistance with hospital administrative and clinical tasks in the respiratory environment, including cleaning equipment, participation in rounding to increase awareness of ancillary workflows, and support to adjacent departments/team in non-licensed tasks will prepare the apprentice for future role in a licensed capacity.
Upon successful completion of the RT program and certification exam at the conclusion of this apprenticeship, incumbent will transition to RT applicant as a Certified RT. This will occur when licensure examination is passed or within six months from the date of graduation.

Within our variety of high-acuity, highly specialized units, we have nine ICUs (including burns, neuro, vascular, cardiac, general medicine and progressive ventilation). As a respiratory therapist at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, you will learn a multitude of advanced practices such as the use of esophageal balloon-guided ventilation, advanced ventilator strategies including lung protective ventilation and monitoring of indices that have been proven to reduce ventilator induce lung injury (VILI). Education
- HS Diploma
- Must be enrolled in the Respiratory Care at Tidewater Community College program and remain in good standing
